The National Education Toolkit for Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting Awareness

Where does FGM/C happen?

An estimated 100 to 140 million girls and women have undergone FGM/C, and about 2 – 3 million more girls are at risk each year. FGM/C has been documented in 28 countries in Africa and several countries in Asia and the Middle East.

In Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States, some immigrant populations are considered to be at risk. While the main risk is when young girls return to their country of origin, there have been cases where FGM/C has been practised in destination countries.
